Jonestown’s Youngest Entrepreneur

Written by Jake Keiter. This piece was featured in the premier print edition released in May of 2023. Check it out here!

Jonestown has a new rising star in its midst, and she’s only 7 years old! Meet Sophia Velazquez, the owner of Earrings by Sophia, who has set her sights on becoming Jonestown’s youngest business owner. This young entrepreneur is a Jonestown Elementary student with a passion for crafting unique jewelry and a heartwarming story of how she got started.

Sophia’s business began when her mom taught her how to make a pair of earrings, and from there, Sophia’s creativity took over. She began making a variety of earrings, from studs to dangling, in a mix of styles and fashion. Sophia’s love for crafting jewelry didn’t stop there, as she continuously makes earrings and even fashionable rings. Sophia’s mom, Carrie Velazquez, funded the project to help Sophia get started, but Sophia has already paid her mom back and is grasping a good knowledge of the difference between net and gross profits.

“Try to start with a little because if you don’t like to craft it, you won’t get too much,” Sophia warns new crafters.

Sophia sets apart thirty minutes to an hour daily to make and craft earrings. Her work station is set up so she knows where her raw materials are, finished products go, and ready to be shipped items await their new owners. Sophia’s hard work and dedication have paid off, and she is now looking for opportunities with small local vendors and flea markets to help sell her products.

Try to be EASY on the glue!
