Keystone Fire Company’s Proposal for Knox Box Ordinance
In a separate but equally crucial development, the Keystone Fire Company presented a proposal to the council, shedding light on the possibility of implementing a Knox Box ordinance within the borough. A Knox Box is a small, wall-mounted safe that securely holds building keys for use by fire departments, emergency medical services, and, in some cases, the police in emergency situations.
The Keystone Fire Company, having already presented this proposal to Jackson Township, which subsequently adopted the ordinance, brought their case to Myerstown Borough. The proposed Knox Box ordinance aims to enhance emergency response capabilities, ensuring rapid access to crucial building keys during urgent situations.
Under this proposal, new construction and renovations that require permits, along with buildings equipped with automatic sprinkler systems or alarms, and multi-family units, such as apartments, would be mandated to install a Knox Box.
