Bethel Township Decides on Fire Company Routes Amid Concerns
In a significant development during the Bethel Township Board of Supervisors meeting on November 9, the board faced a critical decision regarding the fire company box cards for Fredericksburg and Mt Zion routes. Lisa Rudy, a longtime member of the Fredericksburg fire company, voiced her concerns during the public comment section. She emphasized the effectiveness of the current territory agreement that has been in place for over 40 years. Rudy cautioned the board to base their decision on facts, highlighting potential negative impacts on volunteer firefighters and increased animosity between the two fire companies.
Despite these concerns, Supervisor Bruce Light noted that the current routes are outdated and the change is in the best interest of the residents. Ultimately, the board unanimously approved the motion to change the box cards, a decision that might reshape emergency responses in Bethel Township.
License Plate Reader Proposal Sparks Debate
Another topic of interest was the proposal to install a license plate reader at the intersection of Rte 22 and Rt 343, funded by the District Attorney’s office. The reader is expected to assist law enforcement in identifying offenders and suspect vehicles. However, a discrepancy was noted by a township resident regarding the funding of the project. While the township is expected to bear only the electricity costs for five years, a recent LebTown article suggested that other local governments were told they would cover costs for the final three years.
The lack of clarity and the absence of the requester at the meeting led the township officials to table this topic for further investigation and discussion.
Northern Lebanon High School Renovations Get a Green Light
In another key decision, the board granted a one-month time extension for the waiver request regarding renovations at Northern Lebanon High School. The planned renovations include a new HVAC system, additional parking, more sidewalks and street lighting, and improved stormwater drainage. This development is a step forward in enhancing the infrastructure and safety of the school environment.
The Bethel Township Board of Supervisors meeting concluded with these significant decisions, each set to have a lasting impact on the community. The board’s actions on the fire company routes, the license plate reader proposal, and the high school renovations reflect the ongoing efforts to address the evolving needs of Bethel Township.
