Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: A Happy Haven Along the Susquehanna

Ranked Among the Happiest Places to Live in the U.S.

In a recent revelation that is sure to put smiles on the faces of its residents, Harrisburg, the picturesque capital city of Pennsylvania, has earned its place among the happiest places to live in the United States. According to a study by Outside, an online publication that covers an array of topics including racing, history, food, culture, travel, and tech, Harrisburg secured a spot in the top 15 happiest cities in the country.

The Pursuit of Happiness

The study, which sought to identify these joyous pockets of America, relied on Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index to pinpoint top-scoring counties for further evaluation. Researchers then meticulously graded each location on three key categories: “Publication Land and Affordability,” “Climate Change and Inclusivity,” and “The Stats,” encompassing factors such as population, demographics, and house prices.

A Standout City

Harrisburg emerged as one of the standout cities in this nationwide happiness assessment. Outside’s report highlighted the city’s exceptional qualities, drawing particular attention to its “robust arts scene, cultural events, 25 parks, and enviable status as one of the Northeast’s more affordable midsize towns.”

A City by the River

The study paints a vivid picture of Harrisburg’s charm, stating, “This small capital city sits on the east bank of the Susquehanna River.” It further mentions the historic People’s Bridge, proudly standing as one of the longest pedestrian bridges globally, connecting to the serene 63-acre City Island. This island oasis is known for hosting minor-league baseball games, recreational volleyball, and a paddlewheel riverboat that provides valuable lessons in local ecology.

Nature’s Bounty

Venturing beyond the city limits, Harrisburg offers a wealth of outdoor activities that contribute to the overall well-being of its residents. The study notes, “In the greater area, you can kayak on the river and on two creeks perfect for beginners and families; mountain-bike more than 65 miles of maintained trails; run or bike the 20-mile Capital Area Greenbelt; and hike to Hawk Rock or Peter’s Mountain on the Appalachian trail.”

A City of Joy

This recognition not only highlights Harrisburg’s natural beauty and cultural vibrancy but also underscores the sense of community and happiness that permeates the city. As Harrisburg basks in the glory of being labeled one of the happiest places to call home in the nation, it’s clear that this captivating city along the Susquehanna River has captured not only the hearts of its residents but also the attention of the country.
