Myerstown Borough Council recently convened a meeting on June 13th to address various matters of importance within the community. The council deliberated on concerns raised by residents regarding the ownership of chickens, approved a request for a 5K run through the Borough, and welcomed a new member to the recreation board.

One of the key topics discussed during the meeting was the issue of residents owning chickens within the Borough. The council revealed that several individuals had received letters from the zoning officer, emphasizing that owning chickens was strictly prohibited. Despite the lack of exceptions, residents expressed their discontent with this decision. Many argued in favor of keeping chickens for various reasons, such as personal enjoyment and sustainable living. The council members listened attentively to these concerns and assured the residents that their feedback would be taken into consideration for future discussions on the matter, but at this time the decision stands.

In a move to promote community engagement and physical activity, the ELCO Activity Network presented a proposal for a 5K run called the “Dead Isaac Run.” The event aimed to take participants through the heart of the Borough, highlighting its historical sites along the way. After careful consideration, the council approved the initial request for the 5K run, acknowledging the potential benefits it would bring to both residents and visitors. By incorporating local history into the route, the event sought to foster a sense of pride in the community’s heritage while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

Additionally, the council addressed personnel matters during the meeting. One notable decision involved the appointment of Angie Holmes as a member of the recreation board. Holmes, known for her passion for community involvement and dedication to enhancing recreational opportunities, was warmly welcomed by the council.

Council members recognized the importance of the recreation board in providing diverse activities and programs for residents of all ages. With Angie Holmes joining their ranks, the board is poised to make further strides in expanding offerings and fostering a sense of community through recreational pursuits.
